I am writing in response to the April 2 article on the San Diego district attorney’s report on Waste Management Inc. (“D.A. Report Urges Caution in Waste Management Deal”).

The district attorney’s report is a biased, unprofessional and incomplete effort that bears little resemblance to the company that our 230 San Diego County employees represent. A possible explanation for the bias in the report may lie in the county’s opposition to private sector involvement in waste disposal projects.

More comprehensive, independent reviews of our company performed by other cities and nationally recognized consulting firms have documented Waste Management’s leadership role in the environmental services industry.

When the district attorney’s office began this investigation, contrary to press accounts, we offered our full cooperation and access to our company records. Our attempts at cooperation were rejected. We can now see why. In our view, the report was never intended to be objective.

An objective report on our company would have cited our model environmental compliance programs, our leadership role as the nation’s largest recycler and our 1,700 performance-based contracts with municipalities across the country.

An objective report on our company would have documented our more than 20 years experience faithfully servicing the waste collection and recycling needs of San Diego County, our extensive involvement in community activities and our excellent customer service record.

Particularly outrageous are the unsubstantiated character attacks on the employees of Waste Management of San Diego--people who provide essential environmental services. They are the same people who will be out there today as every other day, picking up the trash, providing recycling services and making San Diego a cleaner place to live.
