James Schwartz; Retired Attorney

James Schwartz, who practiced law in the San Fernando Valley for more than 20 years, has died at an Encino hospital. He was 76.

Schwartz died Thursday of cancer, said his wife, Ruth Schwartz.

Born in Montreal, Canada, Schwartz came to the United States as an infant and became a naturalized citizen in 1940.

He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Ohio State University and served as a second lieutenant in the U. S. Army during World War II.

After his discharge, Schwartz earned a law degree from UCLA and started a law practice in Beverly Hills, specializing in federal civil rights, international and entertainment law cases.

In 1970, he moved his office to Encino, where he practiced until a year ago.

In addition to his wife of 41 years, Schwartz is survived by his son, John Schwartz of Simi Valley; daughter, Jan Schwartz of Encino; brother, Robert Schwartz of Beverly Hills; sisters, Goldie Rosencranz of Fountain Valley and Sylvia Fineberg of Irvine, and two grandchildren.

Private services have been held. The Neptune Society in Burbank handled the arrangements.
