TRY THE RIGHT LIMIT: The DMV is trying something new to combat pedestrian highway deaths along Interstate 5. It’s mailing a warning to Southern California drivers who renew their licenses: slow down at night to the legal 55-m.p.h. speed limit between San Clemente and the Border Patrol checkpoint. Reason: More than 40 pedestrians--most of them fleeing immigrants--have been killed since 1987 trying to cross the freeway at night. . . . “Darkness and speeding traffic have forced motorists like yourself into an unwanted role in this tragedy--once you see them it’s too late,” the state’s message says. . . . The DMV says the average speed along there is 70 m.p.h.
Danger Zone: Since 1987, 40 people have been killed crossing the I-5 along this eight-mile stretch.
