The Navy plans to base a new guided missile destroyer in San Diego beginning in June, 1993, U.S. Reps. Duncan Hunter (R-Coronado) and Randy Cunningham (R-San Diego) announced Tuesday.

The John Paul Jones will add 311 personnel and $7.4 million in military payroll to the local economy, according to the congressmen, who both sit on the House Armed Services Committee.

The John Paul Jones is the third DDG-51 Arleigh Burke class destroyer to be built for the Navy and the first to be home-ported on the West Coast. The other two are home-ported in Norfolk, Va.

Cunningham called the destroyer “one of the most technologically advanced warships in the world.”

The 466-foot-long vessel is expected to set new standards for stealth, appearing smaller and less threatening on radar.

When the Bath Iron Works in Bath, Me., completes construction of the vessel later this year, the destroyer will undergo sea trials before sailing to San Diego, the congressmen said.
