Nation IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : Tsongas Had Cancer Relapse, Doctors Say

Former Massachusetts Sen. Paul E. Tsongas’ doctors now say his lymphoma returned in 1987, less than a year after the former presidential candidate underwent a bone marrow transplant, the New York Times reported. Tsongas has remained free of lymphoma, a cancer of the immune system, for five years. But the paper reported that experts said the new details could alter the favorable prognosis Tsongas’ doctors have given. One doctor said the relapse is significant because it means that the transplant did not cure him.
