School Trustee Wants Pay Cuts of $2 Million

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Glendale Board of Education member Sharon Beauchamp on Tuesday proposed reducing salaries of district administrators to help salvage nearly $2 million worth of student programs slated for budget cuts in June.

“Given the fact that we are all here for the students . . . I am suggesting that the board direct staff to prepare a preliminary budget that would include a salary reduction and not a reduction of programs and services to the students,” Beauchamp said.

The proposal--for one-time cuts for the 1992-93 school year--would be for 10% cuts from top management salaries, 5% from middle management, and a 2% reduction for teachers and classified personnel.

Beauchamp proposed using the money to rescue a $496,631 program for troubled students and a $45,000 ROTC program at Hoover and Crescenta Valley high schools, both slated for cuts. Nearly 40 La Crescenta ROTC cadets protested the cuts at Tuesday’s board meeting.

The proposal also would save positions of counselors, psychologists and junior high school librarians, all on a list of cuts proposed by district committees.

Supt. Robert Sanchis, whose $105,000 yearly salary would be affected, said a 10% reduction in top management salaries would save $70,000. The bulk of the $2 million would come from cuts in middle management, teachers and classified employees.

Board member Jane Whitaker, who opposes the committee-proposed cuts, said she intends to submit a separate plan. The board plans a study session open to the public, possibly on May 12, to discuss the new proposals.
