Huntington Park : New Police Pact Spreads 19% Pay Hike Over 4 Years

Share

After difficult contract renewal negotiations, the Huntington Park City Council has approved a new pact with the city’s police association.

The four-year contract, retroactive to last July, gives police officers a total pay increase of 19%, distributed in increments. The 75-member association will receive a 3% pay increase this month and another 3% increase in October. The contract includes two 4% pay increases in 1993 and a 5% increase in October, 1994.

The officers had been working without a contract since June. A state mediator was brought into the discussions two weeks ago, after city and police negotiators reached a stalemate over pay raises and the length of the contract.

“Overall, the association is pleased with the contract,” said Michael Craven, association treasurer.

The city also will increase the amount it contributes to medical and dental care for the officers and their families.

Police officers who ride the department’s five motorcycles will receive an additional $100 per month, and all officers will be paid for the holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

In other action, Councilmen Richard Loya and Thomas Jackson, who were elected to new terms in the April 14 election, were sworn in Tuesday. Loya was appointed to the council last fall after the death of Mayor Jack Parks. Jackson has served on the council since 1968. They both won four-year terms.
