The California Department of Transportation has allocated $1.1 million for a car-pool lane on the westbound Artesia Freeway (91). Work will begin in July on a 10-mile stretch from the San Gabriel River Freeway (605) in Cerritos to the Harbor Freeway (110) near Gardena. It will be completed by the end of the year.

“A car-pool lane carries 2 1/2 times the number of people as a regular freeway lane,” said Jerry B. Baxter, Caltrans District 7 director.

Caltrans already operates an eastbound car-pool lane on the Artesia Freeway between the 605 and 110 freeways. The lane was constructed in phases starting in 1985, and the last stretch, from the Harbor Freeway to Central Avenue in Carson, was completed in March.

Next year, both car-pool lanes on the Artesia Freeway will be extended 4.3 miles eastward to the Los Angeles County line.
