WEST COVINA : Man Gets Life, No Parole in Slaying at Holiday Inn
Lucien Martin, 20, of Gardena was sentenced Thursday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for his part in the slaying of Raymond G. Shield, a 61-year-old West Covina community activist.
In imposing the sentence, plus 10 years for a string of armed robberies committed the day of the murder, Pomona Superior Court Judge Robert Martinez said Martin “never should be released to society” because of his “total indifference to the sanctity of human life” and his “lack of human compassion.”
When Martinez directed that Martin pay $10,000 to compensate his victims, Martin laughed out loud. Martin and his co-defendant, Paul Watkins, 23, of Moreno Valley, were found guilty March 11 of murdering Shield on July 17, 1990, as the engineering consultant stood outside the West Covina Holiday Inn with his family. Watkins will be sentenced May 11 and faces a possible death sentence.
