Memphis Deserves Credit

Share

Reference to the Armand Hammer Museum of Art’s showing of the Catherine the Great treasures (“Catherine the Extended,” April 1) leading your readers to believe that this Los Angeles display was the first outside of Russia does a great injustice to the city of Memphis. Memphis made the gamble that public reception would justify bringing it to this country. The Queen’s coach was restored at that city’s expense in Russia, a condition of the release of the treasures, among other considerable costs.

The Memphis venture was a success, drawing visitors not only from nearby areas but from points distant in the East and Midwest. Before the time came to return it all to Russia, the Hammer Museum asked for it. The Times should let its readers know why they have the good fortune to see this display.
