McClintock Has Disdain for Women

Share

Rep. Tom McClintock’s plan to abolish the Commission for Women does much more than just anger women (“McClintock’s Plan Angers Women’s Commission,” April 8). It shows his complete disdain and lack of respect for, to say nothing of appreciation for, the women of Ventura County.

For the record, anyone can check to see the amount of money any of the 15 commissioners are being paid. Nothing, zip, zilch, nada . It is a purely voluntary assignment. The yearly expenditure that this county deems too much to spend for the female half of the population usually runs in the neighborhood of $32,000--not a very expensive neighborhood. This amount is to cover rent and two part-time employees.

The commission acts as an advisory board to the county supervisors on issues that are of particular importance to women: affordable housing, transportation, child care, legislation, education, violence against women and job discrimination. Nothing that McClintock finds of any value.

This is indeed an “advocacy” group. If the legislators considered women of any import, there would be no need for advocacy.
