Not Guilty as Charged

By labeling me homophobic because I protested the actions of a few gay protesters, Kevin Adams has stereotyped me as unjustly as he fears “Basic Instinct” viewers will stereotype all lesbians as killers (Letters, April 12).

I am nowhere near homophobic. My little brother is gay, three of my best friends are gay, and I’ve raised thousands of dollars for AIDS research by performing with gays in the “Heartstrings” tour, dancing with gays at the AIDS Dance-a-Thon year after year and collaborating with gay songwriters. One of my songs is featured in a documentary about a church’s efforts to help AIDS victims.

In the real world, I think everybody’s great in their own weird way. In the reel world, I think every character, gay, straight or undecided, is screwed up or there’d be no reason for him or her to be in the writer’s story.
