The Region : Mosquito Warning Issued
The county’s Department of Health Services is warning that the year’s plentiful rains may cause an abundant crop of mosquitoes.
Cautioning that the insects can transmit the potentially deadly St. Louis encephalitis virus, health officials are encouraging people to eliminate potential breeding places such as standing water in buckets, jars or old tires.
Local mosquito abatement districts also will provide, free of charge, minnow-sized fish that eat mosquito larvae and can be placed in pools or ponds.
The mosquito season runs roughly from April to September. For information on the fish or how to solve problems with mosquitoes, call (818) 764-2010.
