Long Beach : Manager of Avalon Hospital Fired; Replacement Named

The troubled Avalon Municipal Hospital on Santa Catalina Island has a new administrator--its third in a year.

Anora Tracy, a former vice president at Pacific Hospital of Long Beach, became the tiny hospital’s new administrator April 20.

Tracy replaces Deborah Andersen, who was fired, said Ron Yukelson, a spokesman for Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, which manages the Avalon hospital. Yukelson would not elaborate on Andersen’s dismissal, saying it was a personnel matter.

The administrator who preceded Andersen, Lew Gillette, resigned amid rumors of financial mismanagement. Yukelson said that Andersen’s dismissal was not tainted by similar rumors. “She cleaned up a lot of the mess,” he said.

The 12-bed hospital is losing money, and Long Beach Memorial wants to let its contract expire Dec. 31. In the meantime, however, Long Beach Memorial is working with Avalon officials to come up with alternatives to keep the island’s hospital running after this year, Yukelson said this week.
