Digital May Build Plants in Russia

BOSTON — Digital Equipment Corp. said Thursday it is considering several sites in the former Soviet Union for manufacturing plants but is hesitating because of uncertainty over how long it will take to become profitable.
DEC’s Russia general manager, Peter Sipos, said the nation’s No. 2 computer maker is looking at several sites for what would be its first manufacturing plant in the Commonwealth of Independent States.
Sipos, at a briefing at Digital’s DECWorld marketing show, said the Urals were being considered, as was the Russian far east.
