Development Award: Henry T. Segerstrom, who developed the South Coast Plaza shopping center and the surrounding office area, has been selected as Builder/Developer of the Century by the UCI Sumigarden Conference.

Wow, developer of the entire century? Didn’t the same award go to Ralph Lewis of Lewis Homes last year, John Lusk of the Lusk Co. the year before and William Lyon of the William Lyon Co. the year before that?

“There were already a lot of Builder of the Year awards around, so we wanted to do something different,” chuckled Richard Rodner, director of development for the UCI Graduate School of Management, which organizes the annual real estate conference.

Also, Rodner added, when they first presented the award four years ago, they meant for it to be a onetime event. “It was so successful that we decided to continue the tradition,” he said. This year’s conference will take place next Tuesday at the Four Seasons Hotel in Newport Beach.
