‘Young Twerp’ Is Full of ‘Bigoted Nonsense’

Share

I am writing to comment on the bigoted nonsense perpetrated in “Generation Gap Goes High Tech” (April 21). I would love to know where the gentleman (I will refrain from calling him a young twerp) got his information. I found particularly objectionable the idea that anyone over 40 isn’t smart enough to deal with such modern machinery as answering machines and VCRs.

I think it is sufficiently precise to state that I have left 50 well behind me. I not only own an answering machine, microwave and two VCRs, which I program without overwhelming difficulty, but also a MAC plus with hard disc, a copy machine and my most recent acquisition, a fax machine.

True, I will probably never be as adept at one of these kids who grew up saying byte before he learned mama . Each new program costs me considerable blood and sweat. On the other hand, I know a gentleman older than I am who took to an IBM computer a few years ago like a duck to water. He can program like a whiz, is rewriting instruction books and is inventing new ways to use publishing programs.

Considering that The Times has a few oldsters of its own who are managing to cope with technology, I am amazed that you would print this kind of pap.
