The car that sped into a group of schoolchildren at O’Hare International Airport, killing a girl, had been recalled for a problem that could cause the throttle to stick, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported Friday.

A General Motors spokesman, however, said the cruise-control problem that prompted the recall would not cause sudden acceleration.

Martin Horvath, 87, told police that the engine of his 1985 Oldsmobile Delta 88 began to race and the vehicle sped onto the sidewalk as he was applying the brakes.

A 9-year-old girl was killed and 78 people, including 65 children, were injured. The children were on a field trip for a tour of the airport.
