Options, a Rosemead-based nonprofit organization that offers Head Start classes, has received an award from the California Department of Education for its child nutrition program.
The Options staff’s innovative way of providing high quality food without using a central kitchen was cited in the award, said Susan Christopher of the education department.
Meals and snacks are prepared in classrooms with electric skillets and microwave ovens. Children often help with cooking and menus reflect their cultural diversity.
Options serves 533 children in 21 federally funded Head Start classes and six state-funded preschool classes in Monterey Park, South El Monte, Monrovia, San Gabriel, Covina, West Covina, Glendora, La Puente, Alhambra, Highland Park, Eagle Rock and Glassell Park.
