Half of American Workers Stressed: Nearly half of American workers worry about their jobs and feel pressure to prove their value as a result of the recession, according to a study by Northwestern National Life Insurance Co. “When you add the effects of the recession, American companies have become pressure cookers,” said Peggy Lawless, a researcher for the insurance concern. “Over-stressed employees are less able to perform their jobs and more afraid to leave them.” The study was based on a survey of 1,299 employees of randomly selected companies across the nation. Four out of 10 workers said their jobs are very stressful or extremely stressful, and 39% said they are thinking about quitting.
