‘Old Joe’ Camel Ads Defended: RJR Nabisco Holdings Corp., at its first annual meeting since becoming a public company again last year, was greeted by more controversy over its “Old Joe” Camel cigarette ad campaign. Several stockholders at the meeting in Wilmington, Del., pressed RJR Chief Executive Louis Gerstner about the cartoon-camel ads, which the U.S. surgeon general has asked the company to pull because of claims that they appeal to children. But Gerstner stood his ground, denying that the ads are targeted at young people and repeating RJR’s support for the campaign.
