Understanding the Riots
The rioting that followed the Rodney G. King verdicts has set off an intense scrutiny of values in Los Angeles and across America.
To explain the causes and effects of the dramatic upheaval, The Times is publishing a series of special sections that will seek a sense of understanding through different means:
On Monday, The Times will explore the roots of social and racial problems underlying the riots and the nature of race relations. Understanding the richness of black history in Los Angeles, the growth of a multiracial city and the failures of the past all are helpful in learning from the present.
On Tuesday, a section of photographs will recall the moments of intensity, of personal bravery and of shame.
On Wednesday, The Times will look at turmoil through the words of participants. What were the lessons learned? What was going through the minds of those who played a role?
On Thursday, a section will examine what has happened to the image and sense of Los Angeles as a multicultural city, how we see ourselves and how others see us. Polls and reflections may be helpful in assessing what our community has become.
On Friday, The Times invites public policy analysts and citizens to discuss what we need to do. What can be done and how difficult is the challenge?
