The Pasadena Symphony, under the baton of Jorge Mester, will perform what is perhaps Giuseppe Verdi’s greatest masterpiece, the Requiem Mass, on Saturday.

Known for its religious intensity, the piece was written by the 19th-Century Italian composer after the death of poet and novelist Alessandro Manzoni.

The 8:30 p.m. performance in the Pasadena Civic Auditorium will mark the debuts with the symphony of soprano Ealynn Voss, mezzo-soprano Lorna-Mae Myers, tenor Eduardo Villa and bass Stephen DuPont. Each has performed with major opera companies in the United States and abroad. They will be accompanied by the Pacific Chorale.

Before the 7:30 p.m. performance, Mary Ann Bonino, director of the Da Camera Society at Mount Saint Mary’s College, will give a lecture on Verdi. Admission is free to ticket-holders.

To introduce children to the symphony and the auditorium, several free events are scheduled Saturday morning. At 9 a.m., there will be a hands-on session with orchestral instruments. At 9:30 a.m., the Pasadena Boys Choir will perform. At 10 a.m., the orchestra will have an open rehearsal.

The morning sessions are open to children ages 4 to 10. They must be accompanied by an adult. For groups of six children or more, call (818) 793-7172 to reserve space.

Evening concert tickets range in price from $18.75 to $37.50. Depending on availability, discounted tickets for students, senior citizens and groups can be purchased one hour before the performance at the auditorium box office, 300 E. Green St. Tickets may be bought over the phone between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. (818) 449-7360.
