San Diego : Drug Smuggler Escapes to Mexico
Border Patrol agents on Friday seized more than 500 pounds of marijuana after following a pickup whose driver later abandoned the vehicle on Otay Mesa, authorities reported.
Agents found 526 pounds of marijuana packaged in 16 plastic bundles after following a man driving a truck west on Otay Mesa Road, a spokesman said. The marijuana has an estimated street value of $1 million, the Border Patrol said.
The driver accelerated after spotting agents in his rear view mirror and turned south on Cactus Road toward the border, officials said.
When the driver reached a solid steel fence just north of the border, he abandoned the vehicle, scaled the 10-foot fence and fled into Mexico on foot, officials said.
