SAN FERNANDO : Doctor Is Ordered to Undergo Testing

Share

A San Fernando Superior Court judge Friday ordered a Newhall doctor convicted of illegally prescribing pain pills to two patients to undergo a 90-day evaluation in state prison before he imposes sentence.

Judge Malcolm Mackey ordered Dr. Sandra Soho, 49, known as Dr. Stanley Soho prior to a 1986 sex-change operation, to turn herself into authorities June 12 to begin the evaluation, which includes psychiatric testing. Sentencing was scheduled for Sept. 11.

Soho, who is free on bail, faces a maximum of three years and eight months in prison. Soho’s attorney, Alex J. Forgette, said he is not opposed to the evaluation.

Soho’s convictions were based on complaints from two Santa Clarita women who said that between August, 1989, and February, 1990, Soho prescribed more than 5,000 pain pills to them.

During a two-week trial, the woman testified that they were visiting Soho as often as once a week and receiving prescriptions for up to 100 pills per visit, and eventually became addicted to the pills.
