Economic Aid for Los Angeles

Share

The disabled community of Los Angeles has some apprehensions about Ueberroth’s plans for rebuilding the burned-out communities.

Considering his record as a can-do administrator, Ueberroth seems capable of pulling together the needed resources. But statements he has made about ignoring regulations and cutting red tape raise questions about whether he’ll do the job with due consideration of human needs.

We are concerned that the accessibility requirements of the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 may be among the laws he bypasses in the name of expediency. Persons with disabilities work and shop at businesses in all the devastated areas. When places of business are rebuilt, they must be made accessible to their disabled employees and customers--just as the law demands.

Ueberroth and the Rebuild L.A. campaign must bear in mind that an accessible facility costs no more to build than an inaccessible one.
