Supreme Court Rules Against Texaco: The high court let stand a $21.5-million jury award against Texaco Inc. for its use of benzene, a cancer-causing petroleum product. The company had appealed a Kansas jury’s verdict on behalf of Diana Mason, whose husband died of leukemia. The court was asked to overturn more than half the award--the $12.5 million in punitive damages. The justices have refused to put strict limits on “punitive damages” against companies accused of reckless wrongdoing.
