State Urges Pension Funds to Help Rebuild L.A.: California’s pension funds are being asked to find ways to allow some of their hundreds of millions of dollars to be used in rebuilding riot-torn areas of Los Angeles, said state Treasurer Kathleen Brown. Brown is calling on the state’s public, private and labor union pension funds to gather for a “summit meeting” to explore new ways to help urban centers. She said both the California Public Employees Retirement System and the California State Teachers Retirement System have said they will explore ways to bring all the various pension systems together. The AFL-CIO has said it will contribute up to $75 million of union pension fund money to help the cause.
