Trial Date Set in Lotus Suit: A federal judge in Boston set a tentative trial date of Nov. 2 for Lotus Development Corp.’s copyright suit against Borland International Inc. Lotus, which has long dominated the computer spreadsheet software market with its 1-2-3 family of products, sued Borland, of Scotts Valley, Calif., in July, 1990, for alleged copyright infringement. The Lotus suit alleges that a feature contained in Borland’s Quattro Pro spreadsheet that made the product work in a similar way as 1-2-3 was a violation of Lotus’ copyright. Borland’s lower-priced spreadsheet has gained market share at Lotus’ expense.
