SDSU Should Draw Bottom Line Where Interest Stops

Bits and pieces . . .

It was certainly no surprise, nor was it out of order, that San Diego State had to trim a number of varsity sports in the face of the 1992-93 budget crisis.

You don’t slash anthropology, religious study, family studies, consumer sciences, industrial studies, health studies, aerospace engineering, Russian, German, natural sciences and recreation, parks and tourism without taking some hits in the fun and games department.

Men’s track has the highest profile of the eliminated programs, but folks in golf and wrestling will all hurt, too. When you learn life’s lessons in athletics, which is something we are always told, some of them are harsh.

However, in keeping with president Thomas Day’s “narrow and deep” approach, perhaps SDSU might simply have eliminated men’s basketball. It benefits a very small number of athletes and stirs little interest in the community.

Wouldn’t it be something if the top four hitters in the National League All-Star lineup were Tony Fernandez, Tony Gwynn, Gary Sheffield and Fred McGriff?

I can’t think of a reason why not.

They would certainly feel at home in San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.

By the way, Hacksaw, the Padres have not made a habit of tantalizing their fans with fast starts and then fading at the finish.

When they awakened Tuesday morning with a 21-17 record and a veritable tie for first place with San Francisco, it represented the first time they had been above .500 after 38 games since 1986.

You have to get away from that high-speed rumor wire once in a while and do some low-speed factual research.

Speaking of radio, I would imagine the Padres’ offensive output of late has produced some real hit tunes on their flagship station.

Fortunately, I have my radio trained so that it only picks up AM in the p.m., unless the Padres are playing a day game in the Eastern time zone.

Ron Newman, exulting after the Sockers defeated Dallas for yet another indoor soccer title: “What a perfect night! We win our 10th championship and my wife loses her voice!”

In light of deepening financial problems at San Diego State, I wonder if Thomas Day is having second thoughts about not hiring a basketball coach who would have virtually guaranteed near-capacity crowds at the Sports Arena.

What was his name again?

Thursday night’s Arena Football exhibition at the Sports Arena is being billed as an opportunity for San Diego to demonstrate its interest and get its very own franchise.

Excuse me, but I have heard this balderdash before National Hockey League exhibitions and summertime National Basketball Assn. “all-star” games and I find it to be a very offensive sales tactic.

Do these people think San Diegans are stupid or naive or both or what?

If my name is Kurt Stillwell and I am watching Tim Teufel fill in for me, I get healthy very quickly.

You’ve heard of Moscow on the Hudson, but how about San Diego on Lake Erie?

The Cleveland Browns roster includes former SDSU stars Webster Slaughter, Patrick Rowe, Richard Brown, Alfred Jackson and Pio Sagapolutele . . . and former Chargers Jamie Holland, Pete Holohan, James Brooks and Cedric Figaro.

What’s more, the Browns’ top draft choice was Stanford’s Touchdown Tommy Vardell, who scored his first touchdowns at Granite Hills High School.

Is Brian Sipe ready to come out of retirement?

Wasn’t the Sockers’ Paul Wright a little underrated as third team All-MSL at forward? I’d like to know what his time might be in the NFL’s benchmark 40-yard dash.

If the Padres are going to make a run at the NL West championship, a key starting pitcher will be Frank Seminara. He’s sitting up in Las Vegas with a 5-0 record and a 2.96 earned run average in a league that inflates earned run averages.

It’s about time to get him down here and get Jose Melendez back to the bullpen, where he is most effective.

Ring down the rafters for USD’s basketball schedule, which includes a Dec. 10 home date against Notre Dame. Oops, wrong Notre Dame. This is the NAIA’s College of Notre Dame (Belmont).

USD’s schedule runs rather heavily toward parochial universities, including its regular West Coast Conference opponents as well as St. Peter’s, Oral Roberts, Southern Methodist and, of course, the wrong Notre Dame.

However, the real Notre Dame will be at USD on Oct. 20 . . . for women’s volleyball.

Why don’t the Padres just go ahead and intentionally walk the bases loaded before bothering to bring Randy Myers into a game? The guy cannot seem to throw a strike until he absolutely must.

With the New York Mets in town, it is interesting to note that three of the top four strike out pitchers in the National League are with the Mets.

Dwight Gooden is not among them.

Isn’t it about time syndicates begin arriving for America’s Cup ‘95? Just kidding.
