The Holocaust and U.S. Jews

Share

In response to “The Holocaust Is Killing American Jews,” Commentary, April 28:

God blessed Ephraim Buchwald, as he blessed me, with his magnificent thoughts. The revisionists who say that there was no Holocaust are not the enemy. Buchwald is the Jewish Pogo who explained that “I have seen the enemy and he is us.”

To be Jewish is to be in love with God, even as we fear him. It is to make the pursuit of justice our pathway. It is to treat our neighbors as we would have them treat us. It is to never forget that history never repeats itself--only we.

It is a relevancy with everyday life, an ecology--the linkage between us and them, God and us. But it must be strengthened with modern methods of teaching, explanations of the Torah that are relevant, reaching out to our friends--the non-Jews--as we explain what and who we are. But first that means to explain it to our young so that history becomes their guide and God their motivator.
