HUNTINGTON BEACH : County to Continue Lifeguard Payment

Under a newly extended agreement, the city will get about $74,000 a year from the county government to help pay for lifeguards at city beaches for the next five years.

The City Council on Monday night approved the new agreement, which calls for an assistance program extending to June 30, 1997.

In a memo to the council, Ron Hagan, the city’s director of community services, said the county provides the subsidy for paying lifeguards because so many county residents from outside Huntington Beach use the city beaches.

“For several decades, the county has provided financial assistance to coastal cities which are a recreational resource for county residents,” Hagan said. “The city beaches are designated as regional recreational areas, and 50% of its visitors are county residents.”

Hagan said the overall county budget allocates $248,000 this year to be shared by all beach cities in Orange County.
