OXNARD : Top Executive of Press-Courier Retires

Share

The publisher of the Press-Courier in Oxnard has announced his immediate retirement, ending a 45-year career with the newspaper.

Jerry N. Scott, 54, said he decided to take an early retirement after serving as the newspaper’s top executive for more than 20 years. Scott and Press-Courier officials refused to elaborate on the decision. A replacement for Scott has not been named, said officials of Thomson Newspapers Inc. of Canada, the chain that owns the Oxnard paper.

The announcement made Monday comes on the heels of an earlier decision by longtime Press-Courier Managing Editor Tom Roberts to retire Sept. 1.

An Oxnard resident for 48 years, Scott began his career at the newspaper in 1947 as a paper boy. He joined the newspaper’s circulation department in 1955 and become circulation manager in 1964. He was appointed general manager in 1972, a title later changed to publisher.

Thomson owns 120 daily newspapers in the United States and another 40 in Canada. It acquired the Press-Courier in 1969.
