$250,000 Raised at Gala Honoring Lillian Zacky

City of Hope National Medical Center raised $250,000 at the 44th annual “Woman of the Year” gala honoring Lillian Zacky. The four-day benefit, held April 27-30 at the Beverly Hilton, was sponsored by City of Hope’s Sportsmen’s Club. Events included a black-tie dinner and daily luncheons. Proceeds will establish the Lillian Zacky Research Fellowship at the medical center. Marilyn Freeman and Terri Kaplan co-chaired the benefit, which was attended by 3,200 guests.

The Vikki Carr Scholarship Foundation received $29,000, net proceeds raised May 9 at a Vikki Carr concert at the Greek Theatre. Carr founded the foundation 20 years ago to provide scholarships for Mexican-American youth. Concert-goers also brought 300 pounds of food, which was donated to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank for distribution to riot victims.

Wellness Community-Westside received $37,500 from Friends of the Wellness Community-Westside, proceeds of fund raising and donations over the last seven months. The friends support the Wellness Community’s free psychosocial support programs for cancer patients and public education about cancer. Rae Ann Sherwood is president.

American Foundation for AIDS Research raised more than $120,000 at a benefit May 5 aboard Princess Cruises’ newest ship, the Regal Princess. Nearly 600 guests enjoyed a five-course gourmet dinner, dancing and entertainment by Roberta Flack.

People for the American Way netted $300,000 and honored Quincy Jones at its Spirit of Liberty Award Dinner May 12 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire. In addition, Time Warner Inc. gave a $100,000 donation to implement a Racial Tolerance Mentoring Project in Los Angeles-area schools. The gala was chaired by Robert Daly and Mo Ostin.

KCET Women’s Council’s “Stay at Home and Show You Care” fund-raiser netted $175,000 for the station, $25,000 more than the anticipated goal. A check will be presented to Channel 28 President William H. Kobin at a Women’s Council meeting today. Fund-raising chairman was Judy Zimbert.

Hollenbeck Youth Center in East Los Angeles has received $62,000 worth of weight equipment from Arnold Schwarzenegger for the center in East Los Angeles. The center, on May 7, 8 and 9, with contributions from Vons Companies, distributed food, diapers, baby formula and other staples to 54 riot-affected areas in Los Angeles.
