Beverly Hills : Levine’s Contract Extended

The Beverly Hills school board has agreed to extend the contract of Supt. Sol Levine by a year rather than negotiate a new contract.

Levine’s three-year contract, which is set to expire June 30, 1993, will be extended to 1994 with no increase in salary. Levine earns $98,600, according to a spokeswoman for the Beverly Hills Unified School District.

Board President Dana Tomarken said the board “wanted to give a clear message that we don’t want him to leave. Superintendents don’t come any better than Sol Levine.”

But Tomarken said she is the only returning member to the board, and the four new members who took office in November said they didn’t know Levine well enough to negotiate a new contract.

Levine served as assistant superintendent in charge of curriculum before he was named to replace retiring Supt. Robert French in 1990.

Before moving to his district posts, he had been principal of Beverly Hills High School for 13 years.
