Apple Creates Unit to Handle New Product: Apple Computer Inc. said it created an Apple P.I.E. division for its planned hand-held machines, which will mix electronics, telecommunications and computer technology. Formation of the Personal Interactive Electronics group, which had been kept secret for a year, signals the personal computer maker’s commitment to an industry that hasn’t yet been born. The Cupertino-based firm will introduce its first “personal digital assistant” next week in Chicago. The videocassette-sized machine apparently will be able to organize and fax information. It will be controlled by a stylus instead of a keyboard, sources say.
