The first post-communism presidents of Russia and Poland, Boris N. Yeltsin and Lech Walesa, signed a friendship pact Friday designed to end almost four centuries of political enmity and military conflict.

“I would like Poland and Russia to become the foundation of the post-communist states of Europe,” said Walesa, who is making his first official visit to the former Soviet Union.

In addition to the friendship treaty, which includes a joint denunciation of the communist system, Poland and Russia also signed a pact stating that an estimated 40,000 former Soviet troops would withdraw from Poland by Nov. 15.
