OXNARD : AIDS Quilt to Be Displayed in June

Share

An AIDS quilt commemorating Ventura County residents who have died from the disease will be shown in June at two events.

The quilt, consisting of a dozen panels, will be featured at the AIDS Care Haircut-a-thon on June 14 and at Oxnard Men’s Day on June 20, said Neil Demers-Grey, co-founder of the quilt project.

More than 180 people in Ventura County have died from complications stemming from acquired immune deficiency syndrome, he said.

“The quilt is ever-growing. We’ve got a list of obituaries,” said Demers-Grey, who made a panel in memory of roommate Tony Franklin.

Volunteers complete a panel in about three months, Demers-Grey said.

The quilt has been shown at other events in the county, but several new panels will be featured in June.

The AIDS Care Haircut-a-thon will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Oxnard Beauty College, 655 South C St.

Oxnard Men’s Day will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Oxnard College.
