Presidential Politics

It is hard to grasp the magnitude of a billion dollars. Your expose of Perot’s holdings (May 20) gave dimension to the concept. Since he is only one of a class that commands such wealth, I believe that we as a democratic society are in danger.

The super-rich command such wealth that they can buy the votes of the President and our legislatures, and have done so. Not content with that, Perot is now trying to buy the presidency and install himself. I haven’t heard him say anything about the dangers to democracy from radical concentrations of wealth. Rather, listen carefully and you will hear the words of a benevolent dictator, nothing more.

The siren song “Trust me with your problems and I will do you no wrong” has seduced more than one society, but always has ultimately failed. Our democracy must awaken to the threat. The danger is immediate and real.
