CAMARILLO : Residents Object to Recycling Proposal

Share

Gold Coast Recycling Inc. has proposed putting a transfer station in Camarillo that would sort recyclables from 4,000 tons of trash per day, a plan that has already drawn opposition from residents living near the site.

Gold Coast, which operates a center in Ventura, wants to locate the new facility at the International Paper Building on Pleasant Valley Road in Camarillo.

However, at a City Council meeting this week, several residents opposed putting such a facility near their homes, saying they did not want to listen to large trucks going by all day. The residents noted that they already endure airplane noise and put up with pesticides and dust from nearby farms.

Gold Coast is one of about six companies that have expressed interest in operating a facility that county and city waste officials hope to build by mid-1994, said Christy Madden, manager of the Ventura County Solid Waste Management Department’s planning division.

A team of city and county officials is working to draw up a request for proposals for the facility this summer, she said.
