Share

The U.S. Department of Labor announced Friday that it will provide $12 million in emergency funds to employ and train workers dislocated by the Los Angeles riots.

The funds will be used for a wide range of services, including career and financial counseling, remedial training, job placement assistance, on-the-job training and stress-management counseling. Support services such as child care, transportation and medical assistance will also be available.

While the assistance is designed to provide long-term, permanent employment, temporary jobs may also be provided in public and private nonprofit agencies for cleanup and renovation of public facilities and to help deliver services to riot-ravaged neighborhoods.

The grant will be administered by the California Employment Development Department, which will be assisted by local groups representing neighborhoods most affected by the riots, according to officials.

The Labor Department previously had committed $2 million to employ dislocated workers in the cleanup of riot areas and $1 million to support the Department of Justice’s “weed and seed” program in Los Angeles.
