Regarding “Grand Illusionist,” Larry Christon’s commentary on Johnny Carson (May 17):

We know that Carson is not ready to move into obscurity. We propose an intellectual, even if not golden, parachute for a safe withdrawal and tapering of his adrenaline cascade.

We all need Carson’s help to find our way in this dismal, humorless, substanceless, overhyped political landscape in which we are floundering. The coming five months between his retirement and the election of our next President are critical. Can we trigger Carson’s enthusiasm to play a vital part by heading a monthly or weekly commentary on American and world politics in whatever media would give him the widest audience?

We do not advocate that he support a specific candidate, but we are convinced that he could help rouse the public into demanding real, honest commitment from their candidates in place of meaningless ad agency sound bites.

Carson is in the unique position of being able to deal with politics in the satirical tradition of Plato, Socrates, Voltaire, Brecht, Sandberg, Twain, ad infinitum. He offers intelligent humor and integrity, two qualities much needed in America today.
