Radical, Not Environmental

As someone who was about to join the Sierra Club and support its causes, I am utterly amazed by the mailer that I and thousands of others received. I am appalled that it has the Sierra Club letterhead and is signed by Bob Hattoy, regional director. The name and address of “Hayden for Senate--92” is printed at the bottom in the smallest possible script, so one can only conclude that someone is ashamed of having done this deed.

I am disappointed that the club would so boldly support Tom Hayden (it seems that some political quid pro quo is owed), and therefore risk losing the current and future support of Hayden’s many opponents, liberal and conservative.

Does Hattoy believe the absurdity that opponents of Hayden tend to be non-environmentalists?

Neither do I support Cathy O’Neil, Hayden’s opponent. But it’s hard to support Hattoy when his letter makes ridiculous claims, such as that the International Monetary Fund destroys the environment.

At the risk of rejection of my application for membership, I call for the resignation of Hattoy, who seems to me to be more “radical” than “environmentalist.” Let Hayden help the cause in some other way, not by discrediting the movement by association with his bankrupt socialist ideas.
