After 11 years of searching, a salvage team burrowing through the Greenland ice cap reached the first of six P-38 Lightning fighter planes that crash-landed in World War II. “The amazing thing is that it was only 257 feet down,” said organizer Richard Taylor. “We thought it would be 20 feet deeper.” The 16-man team from the Atlanta-based Greenland Expedition Society pumped steam down a drill shaft to hollow out a cavern so they could lower themselves to one of the planes. They plan to dismantle it and haul it to the surface, Taylor said.
