Summer Activities for Children Set

It is time again to start planning for children’s summer activities and many organizations offer special programs. Most have limited enrollment, and early registration is advised. A sampling:

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County will be having natural science workshops for children from first through ninth grades in subjects such as botany, mineralogy and paleontology in three summer sessions, beginning July 14. Call (213) 744-3534.

Los Angeles Pierce College Extension will offer summer science classes for children beginning July 6. Programs include “Science Fun” for children 3 and 4, “Under the Sea” for children 4 to 6 and “Science Club” for children 9 and 10. Call (818) 719-6425.

Beginning June 15, the Kidspace Museum in Pasadena begins its “Super Summer Season” of specially scheduled programs, including a science series highlighted by workshops on whales, earthquakes, insects and the environment. Call (818) 449-9144.

The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History is now having a “Children’s Science Book Fair” through June 14. The books are filled with science activities and provide good summer reading. Classes for children in kindergarten through third grade will demonstrate activities from some of the books. Readings are scheduled. Call (805) 682-4711, Ext. 316.

The Orange County Marine Institute in Dana Point has a full schedule of programs this summer. Children 3 and 4 can attend “Mommy and Me and the Sea” classes in July and August, children 5 to 7 can learn about marine and tide pool animals at the “Junior Sea Camp,” and children 8 to 15 can attend classes and workshops on a variety of subjects throughout the summer. HEALTH/MEDICINE

The American Diabetes Assn. will sponsor a seminar for people with diabetes and their families on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Universal City Hilton. “Diabetes: Moving Toward A Cure” will feature medical experts discussing research information, workshops and information on all aspects of the disease. The American Lung Assn. of Los Angeles County will have a comprehensive lung health conference Thursday and Friday at the Burbank Airport Hilton Hotel.
