You are now entering the Twilight Zone: Walking along the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Norma Oreskovich of L.A. came upon a group huddled around a star bearing a familiar name:

Reginald Denny.

“They were smiling,” Oreskovich said, leading her to believe that they perhaps realized it wasn’t a plaque for the man beaten in the L.A. riots.

Rather, the star honors Reginald Denny, the British-born actor whose stiff upper lip appeared in more than 200 movies, including “Around the World in 80 Days.”

Johnny Grant, the honorary mayor of Hollywood, said “it wouldn’t surprise me if people see ‘Reginald Denny’ and think it’s him (the truck driver). You should hear the things I’m asked. I had one guy ask me whether the stars are buried under there (the plaques).”

If tourists are surprised over that particular star, they aren’t alone. When the Reginald Denny plaque was mentioned to a spokeswoman for the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, she responded in disbelief, “What?”

He led two lives: Mayor Grant added that he hadn’t spoken about actor Reginald Denny since, oh, the night before. That was in conjunction with Denny’s other career as an inventor.

“We had a celebration for Marilyn Monroe’s 66th birthday at the Roosevelt Hotel,” Grant said. “And one of the photos we had showed her working during World War II in a defense plant. The Army photog was sent out there by Capt. Ronald Reagan of the Motion Picture Unit to take some morale photos for the troops. Right away, the photog noticed her. Anyway, the plant made engines for drones. And it was owned by Reginald Denny.”

List of the day: Intriguing signs seen at some area eateries:

* “It takes about 11 minutes from this point to be served and reach the cashier” (front of Clifton’s, downtown L.A.).

* “Where waitress is Queen--and the customer is always wrong” (Millie’s, Silver Lake).

* “Please throw peanut shells on floor” (North Woods Inn, La Mirada).

* “Like the music or leave” (Hainano’s, Venice).

* “Liquor at white patio tables only” (Shoreline Village, Long Beach).

* “It is not impolite to pass others in line if there is a vacant space ahead” (snack shops inside LAX).

* “We do not extend credit to stockbrokers” (Cole’s, downtown L.A.).

35th day of captivity: There’s still no sign of Madonna’s bustier , which a looter stole from the Bra Museum at Frederick’s of Hollywood during the rioting.

miscelLAny:

The publicity stunt in which a self-described artist hung from a cross fastened to the “Y” in the HOLLYWOOD sign on Monday brings to mind a more tragic incident involving an aspiring actress named Lillian (Peg) Entwistle. Apparently depressed over her career, she leaped to her death from the letter “H” on Sept. 18, 1932.
