Annie Welbourn; Red Cross Activist

Annie Lloyd Welbourn, who was a Red Cross volunteer when the United States entered World War I in 1917 and was chief of Red Cross volunteer services during World War II, has died in Los Angeles, her son announced this week.

John L. Welbourn said his mother was 105 when she died May 24.

She spent her entire life in Los Angeles and helped found the Los Angeles Red Cross chapter in 1916. In 1922 she became secretary of the chapter and then head of volunteer services at the outbreak of World War II.

Among her many honors was being selected a Los Angeles Times Woman of the Year in 1947. The local Red Cross chapter made her an honorary committeewoman during its 75th anniversary celebration last year.

Besides her son, she is survived by a daughter, Dorothy, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
