John Van Gels to Head McDonnell’s MD-11 Program

* McDonnell Douglas Corp. named John J. Van Gels vice president and general manager of the MD-11 program, replacing Joe. B. Pikle, who is on a medical leave.
Van Gels, who is at least the third MD-11 chief, was formerly vice president and general manager of the product center operations at Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach. He started with McDonnell in 1963.
In addition, Philip M. (Buzz) Lowry has been named vice president and general manager of MD-11 operations and business management, reporting to Van Gels. Lowry was previously vice president and general manager of the MD-80 program. Lowry relaced Jack Hayden, who resigned to accept a job with another company.
