Monrovia : ‘No’ on Term Limits
The City Council on Tuesday rejected, by a 3-2 vote, a proposal supporting term limits for elected officials in cities such as Monrovia.
Councilman John Nobrega asked the council to endorse a bill in the Assembly that would allow local voters to limit the terms of elected officials.
Mayor Robert Bartlett and Councilwomen Lara Blakely and Mary Wilcox voted against the idea, saying the law would take away the voters’ right to choose candidates they support but who would be unable to run just because they were incumbents.
Bartlett has been on the council for 18 years and Wilcox for 12 years.
Phyllis McCarville, a newly elected councilwoman, supported the idea and has said she will not run again for council after serving two terms.
