John P. Dieterich; Retired Allergist

Dr. John Pershing Dieterich, a longtime Glendale allergist, has died at his Glendale home. He was 72.

Dieterich died Monday of cancer, according to a family friend.

A Glendale native and the son of a physician, Dieterich completed his undergraduate work at USC and graduated from the USC School of Medicine. During World War II, he served as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. After he was discharged, Dieterich opened a practice in Glendale in the late 1940s. He had been a staff member of Glendale Memorial, Behrens and Verdugo Hills hospitals and retired in 1985.

Dieterich was a member of the American College of Allergy and Immunology, in addition to belonging to the Los Angeles and Newport Harbor Yacht clubs, Cruising Club of America and La Grulla, a hunting and fishing club.

Dieterich is survived by his wife of 36 years, Adrienne Aye Dieterich, and son John Dieterich Jr. of Irvine.

A memorial service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. today at Wee Kirk O’ the Heather Church at Forest Lawn Memorial-Park, 1712 S. Glendale Ave. in Glendale. Forest Lawn Mortuary in Glendale is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the John Dieterich Fund at Glendale Memorial Hospital, 1420 S. Central Ave., Glendale 91225-7036, or the USC School of Medicine.
